speed dial by yoyofactory
width - a smidgen over 1 3/8 inches
diameter - 2 3/16 inches
weight - a little over 63 1/2 grams
setup - stock plastic response shuttles, small dorothy bearin', 100% poly leash and 5a die.
the speed dial's packagin' is quite nice. a plastic cylinder holds the speed dial, but the extras that come w/ the yo yo is where the packagin' really shines. along w/ the speed dial comes an extra pair of response shuttles (rubber), an extra 100% cotton leash, an instructional booklet and an awesome reflective speed dial man sticker (sure to compliment any yo yo case or display).
w/ the assumption that yoyofactory is targetin' a different demographic w/ the speed dial, as compared to the 888, g5 or gm2...i think the packagin' is definitely an eye catcher. i think half the battle of sellin' somethin' to someone is makin' it look interestin' enough to just pick up and check out. and imho, yoyofactory has done a great job on this...your graphic artist deserves a raise.
right out of the package the speed dial was semi-unresponsive. tug response at high spin speeds and bind returns are low spin speeds. even w/ the shuttles fully recessed, there was still a bit of response w/ the speed dial. but i think w/ a fully cleaned bearin’ (the one i was usin’ was a stock dorothy), and a little more break in time...dead response can be achieved.
in hand, the speed dial feels like a slim line yo yo. imho, it is also on the 'light' side of the yo yo weight scale. for me, this makes the speed dial ideal for faster type play...and the small bearin' just screams 5a. the bearin' gap is not very wide. though this can be compensated somewhat w/ the adjustment of the response shuttles, a small gap still remains. i don't find this to be a problem, if i throw the speed dial straight. but otherwise, play is not very forgivin'. to date, the speed dial is the smoothest, most consistent under 50.00$ yo yo i've thrown.
the speed dial's play is reminiscent of a nm4 or xcon v....but smoother. there's a hollow feelin' to the yo yo (though this may not be the case w/ the rubber shuttles...i didn't really try 'em), but this does not affect the stability or balance of the speed dial. if anything, it accentuates the weight of the aluminum body, makin' it roll that much more true. i find the plastic rims to be really functional (as my speed dial has taken flight several times since i received it), protectin' the rich, beautifully anodized/powdercoated body. the coatin' on the speed dial is applied evenly all the way around. the quality assurance guys at yoyofactory must've put in some overtime testing and reviewing these babies.
i am so happy that yoyofactory brought back the f.a.s.t. shuttle response design. i thought the adjustable shuttle response worked beautifully in the 401k...and w/ the speed dial, it is no different. allowin’ the player a multitude of response settings to choose from...and i think the rubber shuttles provide even more response options. the dials are also rounder than the 401k’s...which is nice, because i don’t feel like i’m stickin’ my thumb into a meat grinder when attemptin’ thumb grinds/catches. the bearin’ seats on the speed dial are of a post barebones design. by allowin’ the bearin’ to ‘clip’ onto the seat, i think this results in smoother overall play.
besides the price, i can see how yoyofactory is targetin’ a wider audience w/ the speed dial. the gap size isn’t ominous like some of the more advanced yo yos (i.e. 888, gm2, oxy4, barebones, etc.), allowing for easier binds (among other things). and the plastic rims on the speed dial, are just beggin’ to take on the pavement...resultin’ in a more durable yo yo (or maybe i should say, it lessens the concerns for dings). in terms of more advanced play, i really like how the speed dial only rolls one way...straight. really makes me sharpen my play, and roll w/ my ‘a’ game...a beautiful thing.
for 50.00$, there is no reason not to pickup a speed dial. i’m so glad that yoyofactory decided to release an ‘intermediate’ type yo yo, as i can only see this bringin’ even more yo yo players onto the scene. congrats to yoyofactory on such an awesome release...and i would like to thank ben for allowin’ me to write this review and tryin’ the latest yoyofactory release.

mgodinez's review pretty much summed it up, though i would like to add my thoughts:
Play: This yoyo plays great, for 1A 5A and i'm guessing 3A though i don't have 2. I think that the Speed dial delivered what Ben promised "It's to play, have fun with, and not take too seriously…. but if you need to impress, it will do that too.
It's not the 'ultimate' players' yo-yo"
Look: This yoyo looks great, I love the packaging. It has a kind of Paleo future look, and Ben, you really need to give that graphic designer a raise.
In short, it delivered what the metal zero promised, a hi-end yoyo for a lo-end price

if it wasn't for everyone's kind words and input on my reviews, i would not have gotten the opportunity to review the speed dial. and for this, i would like to say 'thank you' to everyone @ theyo.

What do you mean by it's an 'intermidiate' player? Ben was saying the same thing.

I would love to see this with a large dorothy bearing (maybe even concave??,) cuz when you go big, small just doesn't compensate.

That is not the point of this yo-yo, which obviously will be lost by some on their quest for no response and triple beefcaked gaps.
