Dude delrin all the way. Smooth as butter since it's a self lubricating plastic.

For that I used a drill press. I may have access to a lathe in the future though.

With a lathe aluminum is easy to work with. On a drill press Delrin is some good advice. But like someone said earlier, start off with the easiest, cheapest alternative to work on your skills and technique.

Delrin is easier; sorry I didn't make that clear. It's softer than aluminum. This is true whether it's on a lathe or a drill press.

Small lathes like mine have a hard time with the aluminum. Cuttting fluid helps, but that's very messy. Delrin is the way to go.

you know.... come to think of it, make 2 relatively smaller versions of these then put an axle in between. I'd love to see how that plays.

I do chain maille, you can see it here and here.

Classic shape is always a good way to go!

But not necessarily the easiest. Angles are actually much much easier than curves, even if you have a good lathe. Curves are tough to make even and the same on both halves since there's no easy way to measure them.

But if you're in it to have fun in the process then go for it! You'll learn a lot, I promise!
