Thread: How can I make lathe cutting tools?

I already know about the sharpened screw driver but I think I need something larger than that if i'm going to flatten the rims of my speed maker. I already have a drill that I can cut on, but I've tried all of my pocket knives (before and after I've sharpened them) on a mod fod project I have lying around. I just need to know if its my tools (which wouldn't surprise me) or my method before i go hacking apart a good yoyo.

You need tool steel and a good grinder to make a lathe cutting tool, and they normally do not come in a size to hold in your hand. They're normally made to use in a tool mount.

Your best bet is to pick up a wood lathe cutting chisel of whatever size you want. Other than that, just go buy a Stanley wood chisel of the right size.
