While driving my work truck around, I often turn off the radio to think. I came up with this idea today, and would like to know what you guys think! Feel free to add to the thread as you see fit!
The Creed of the Reputable Modder:
- If someone hires you to do a mod, do it. Return in a timely manner
- If you're asked to do a certain mod, and you think it would be better another way....do what you were hired to do. If you feel that strongly about it, contact your client with your ideas. If they don't want to change the mod, don't ridicule them for it.
- NEVER badmouth a fellow modder publicly. If the fellow modder does something you don't really approve of, PM him. Think before you do this. Think of all the positives, and the negatives that can come about from "calling him out" You may just make a fool out of yourself!
- ALWAYS give credit where credit is due. Simply put....don't take credit for someone else's creation. i.e. Don't say you "invented" the silicone recess....That's Takeshi's idea if I'm not mistaken!
- Share secrets with REPUTABLE modders! We're not in a competition. Remember why we do what we do....for the greater good of our sport. If you feel that strongly that you have a method of doing something that is that great, I'd say, its OK to keep it to yourself. i.e. Organic paintjobs by YoEric. If by chance you figure out how a fellow modder does a "top secret" mod, keep it to yourself. I'd say it's OK to do it yourself, just don't announce to the world how its done! Probably a good idea to PM the other guy and let him know you've got the secret.
- KEEP SECRETS SECRET! If a fellow modder gives you information on how to do something that you KNOW isn't public knowledge....do your part to keep it that way.
- Help out your fellow modders whenever you can. Know where to get a GREAT deal on a tool, supplies, or whatever? Share the wealth!
- When you get a review, thank the writer! Even if you don't agree with everything that has been said. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. If it's horrible, perhaps you should look at what you're doing, and how you're doing it. Keep in mind, it could be right on the money!
- Don't "Call Out" Other Modders: I learned this one the hard way. Unless you're Shinobu, you're not a mod god. We all do damn good work. If your work is that great, let it speak for itself. There's no need to put others work down just to make your own look better. If you're a new modder, or even new on the forums, pay extra attention to this ever so important rule! I wish I did when I was new on the forums!
- Help Out Kids/Newbies/Less Fortunate: Belong to a club? Are there people there who don't have all the "cool" new yo-yos? Offer to mod a few for them! Free. Keep in mind, this rule just doesn't apply to kids, or even a club. Do you part to promote our sport. Whats the worst that can happen? You lose a few minutes of your time? Think about the flipside of the coin! What if that kid, or whomever goes onto win worlds! All because you gave him the tools to do it! Think about it!
- Don't badmouth companies: They're not in business to make you happy. If you don't like their products....don't use them. Better yet....start your own company!
I'm sure there is more to be said....I'm having writer's block though! I eagerly await your thoughts!

If you're a modder,
then mod;
don't write sermons.
The usual goal of writing rules is to call out people and behaviors who do not respect the norm or the community's values. Kinda paradoxal with the content of your post if you ask me.
I don't get what you are doing and do not understand how that post is contributing anyhow to the community. I think most modders were allready doing a great job with a great ethic code before this thread was made. Either the O.P. has a bad smell of subconscious backstabbing or its more of a guide for neophyte modders who are considering doing pro jobs.

I agree with jhb on this one. I feel that it is easy to buy a few tools and offer to do mods. That doesn't mean that you are ready to do so.
With the animosity of the internet, it is a lot easier to fail and not care. For the most part, the people we talk to, hire for a service, or even B/S/T with are faceless individuals. There is no human attachment/interaction that used to exist between two individuals doing business. This can be easily seen in some of the brutally honest and sometimes malicious comments. It is so easy to say something to someone when it is just on a computer screen and you don't actually have to say it to their face. It is also just as easy for a modder to say they can do something they can't actually do because they have the computer screen to be a filter out the frustrations of their clients and can avoid contact if they desire.
Modfather even pointed out where he had made mistakes as he was learning. He used is own example to point out how easy this can happen and how important it is for others to not make his same mistake.
I am new to the sport and don't know all of the historical or political issues that could be tied to this topic. I certainly don't want to offend anyone either. I just believe in good customer service and believe that has been lost in the U.S.. I like Modfather's Creed and look forward to hiring him at sometime in the future as I continue to grow in this sport.
Just my two cents, and a few more.

First, let me say thanks to YoAdrian...he seems to get it. This thread isn't meant to be a jab at anyone....nor should it be taken that way. This was written to help new modders. There is in no way a "hidden agenda" to this post.

Allow me to simplify and/or correct all of this..
If you can mod, do it.. if you can't, shut up about it. If you aren't 100% positive your answer is the correct one, and you haven't actually dealt with that particular problem yourself, and you don't -really- have the experience.. keep your mouth shut.
If you like something, say it.. if you don't, that's cool too.. this ridiculous idea that we should all be only positive is just stupid. This is the real world, some people won't like what you do.. deal with it. This isn't some church little league where everybody wins.
If you want to charge for stuff, fine.. if you don't, that's cool too. You are doing real work, there is absolutely no reason you shouldn't be paid for it. Helping people out is great if you choose to, but you shouldn't feel obligated to do it.
Other than that.. allow me to paraphrase a long standing idea in this community.. 'mod more, post less'.
KyleYou can argue with me, but you'll still be wrong.

Are you needlessly trying to start problems?
Haven't you learned already?
Didn't you get infraction(s) for starting problems?
Why are you even reading my posts?
Don't you remember....I don't know anything~!

Who exactly are you talking to? Nobody in this thread has tried to start anything..
Some people won't agree with you, I suggest you learn to deal with it.

Kyle, I was talking to the person above my last post. He needlessly tries to start trouble for some reason. I've never met him, nor do I care to....It all started with motorcycles! For some reason, this guy KEEPS "stalking" me on here!
FOR EVERYONES INFORMATION.....MY LAST POST WAS AIMED ONLY AT "FUNTIMEYOHAP" Nobody else should take offense.
And Kyle, you're right...not everyone agrees with my words....thats cool! Thats what makes an online forum so entertaining....to see everyone's perspective on things! What fun would this be if EVERYONE thought the same?
