I am probably not the only person to come up with this fix, but I thought I would share it anyway.
CAUTION: THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IS MEANT FOR THOSE WHO ARE OF APPROPRIATE AGE AND MATURITY IN ORDER TO HANDLE FIRE AND/OR FLAME SOURCES SUCH AS MATCHES OR LIGHTERS, OR FOR THOSE WHO HAVE ADULT SUPERVISION WHILE ATTEMPTING THIS FIX. (e.g. 18 or older) PLEASE READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS COMPLETELY BEFORE PROCEEDING.
If you have had Alchemy or other poly string loose it's manufacturer's knot/loop and then proceed to unravel, you will like this fix if you have not used it before. I probably gave it somewhat away with the above warning, but here it is. Just simply re-twist the string, tie a square knot or whatever knot you prefer, near the end of the string. The following, to be on the safe side, should be done outdoors, away from any flammable or combustible materials. Carefully take a lit match or lighter to the very end of the string (the cut end) in order to melt and fuse the individual threads together, being very careful not to have your fingers or any part of your body come in contact with the flame or the hot melted string. Useing a pair of needle nose pliers or similar tool to hold the string will be a big help here. (The hot string will stick to you and burn like a home made napalm if you get it on you skin). Also, this string if flammable itself and if it flames up on you simply blow it out.
This will leave a slightly scorched/melted ball at the end of your string, but I believe that the advantage of at least not having your string unravel again makes up for this small, slightly unsightly situation. Wait for the string to cool and tie a loop as normal and play it like a madman.
I have only personally tried this with Alchemy string, but I do not see why you could not apply this to any of the 100% polyester string out there. Let me know what you think of this. I hope this helps somebody!

The following pics are not the greatest, but I think they give you the idea of the step by step process described above:

To answer the ? of when this unraveling happens, if that is not clear, it is during storage initially, but I have had ones come completely undone during play, which is not only potentially damaging to the yo-yo, but dangerous. Also, lopping off the loose tag of string at the knot addresses the issue temporarily, but I have found that it can come untied again due to the slippery nature of this string, and you are right back where you began. At least with this fix, if it does come untied, you will not come unraveled, and neither will your string!

I hope this clarifies things for macca and anyone else. If there any more ?'s, or criticism, please feel free.People of poor character tend to blame their choices on circumstances.
