All right, it's been skimmed over briefly on other threads,
It's been mildly discussed on recent threads, and now....it's here:
The Official Guide to Shim Making
(Since I知 such a nice person I知 using small pics for the dial-up people)
    Let痴 get started.
First off you need to gather up some supplies.

    Here's a list of what you'll need:
    1. A standard hole punch (you can get these for about $1 at Walmart, hobby lobby, etc)
    2. A pair of scissors
    3. Sandpaper (I知 using 150 Grit)
    4. Phone cards/Walmart cards/credit cards/itunes/etc
    5. Fingernail clippers/ scissors, or something similar
    6. If you don't have the clippers you can use an x-acto knife (but I don't suggest it, :( long story)

Alright, now that you have all your supplies gathered up, take the hole punch and make a hole on the card material your using(I知 personally using a itunes card)

It should look something like this.

Then take your scissors and cut it off of the card like so.

After that cut off the pointy corners and start to round the shim.

Next, I use these clippers for rounding of the corners; I致e found that fingernail clippers work good as well.

After rounding down the corners, with the clippers you can(but don't have to) Sand the shims outer diameter to look neater(and rounder)and it insures that no part of it's going to touch the shields on the bearing.

Now i've been hearing people saying a standard hole punch will work BUT! It is hard to fit the shim on the yoyo, why not just sand out enough of the inner diameter so that it fits, without force? So i roll up the sandpaper so that i can just twist it around and sand out a little, like this:

If you have an old shim you can check and make sure that yours is about the same size as the store bought shim. You can't tell very well from the picture but mine's about a couple hundredths thinner than my brass shim.

here's what mine look like from start to finish. It took me only a couple short minutes to make one.

Just for kicks i took a couple pics of my shims in my Mini Motu
    My shim(Left) brass shim (right)

After you finish any desired sanding you've now successfully made your own shim.
*Now you can quit hoping that the shim-fairy will come one night and leave some under your pillow, just go make your own *

Hope this guide has helped you, feel free to ask questions or add comments on what you liked or felt was needed in the guide and I値l edit it, and add it.

    Thanks for reading. ^_^* -Tobias

very cool guide and I'm sure it'll help out many...

and I'm willing to bet that the credit card shims work out better than the fiber-board that YYJ uses to make theirs...I would think these would be a bit tougher and less likely to bend and warp like YYJ shims do...

Nice for those of us who have a real tendency of losing the yyj shims often.

thanks luke, and yes i like credit card shims better because they can varie in thickness and they don't crush like the gray and red fiber boards do.

You can kinda sqeeze them a little bit(when twisting the yoyo real tight) because of the material, but they don't touch the shields of the bearing like the fiber board shims do.

i can make them different thicknesses depending on the cards quality like itunes and walmart cards are thicker than arcade and free music download cards (like the one's that come in MP3 boxs.) also i can sand them down aswell. and yeah i used a digital caliper and measured the itunes shim and it was exactly .035.
