Since winning a Dark Magic (thanks TheYoStore!!) a few weeks ago, I've been playing responsive quite a bit more, and enjoying it very much. Prior to this Dark Magic I'd played responsive only with a No Jive, a Flying V, a Freehand 1, a Hyper Freehand, and yoyos like Duncan Imperials (and, of course, loopers). I've been looking through my collection to figure out which yoyos I might like to try responsive, and just today dropped some thick lube in the bearing of a Radian and then an NVx - didn't like the latter as a responsive player, but it really works for me with the Radian. So my question for those of you who like to play responsive - are there particular yoyos you prefer to play responsive? And why?

I definitely enjoy playing the new FH2 responsive. I surprisingly like playing my Pure responsive. It behaves well as a responsive yo-yo with its pad response and D sized bearing and has just enough gap to not be too grabby.

Ok, ok. Now I know this is an obvious answer from me, but hear me out.
I REALLY enjoying playing both responsive and un-responsive on tfl/4xl's.
Single lubed, or double lubed bearings, depending how you like your gap, I prefer the smaller.
The ghostpads give a FANTASTIC bind, where I find a lot of other response systems (oring/sili/stars) can slip while using a lubed bearing, you can pop a fly away dismount on the last breathes of your sleeptime, and it will roll tightly down.
I definitely do understand what you mean about some yoyos not playing great when setup responsive though, it just doesn't click with some.JYC Founder and Werrd Alliance Member

I hate playing my GS2 responsive, it just doesn't feel right. I use a thickly lubed bearing and sili response but it just feels wrong. I need to play around with it a bit more to find a better feeling set up. Any responsive set ups for dual o-ringed YoyoJams would be much appreciated.
My proyo on the other hand, just feels so right for going back to basics with simple loops and dog walking. I've been wanting to pick up a profly to see how far I can push that in terms of 1a trickery.

Generally lighter 'faster' feeling yoyos are more adept to responsive play.
Yoyos that tend to feel a bit bulky are even more so when they are responsive, and they thud on return, which feels icky.
KyleYou can argue with me, but you'll still be wrong.

Skip, I'd never even considered that with a double bearing yoyo you could run one with a bit of thick and one clean. Today I dropped a smidgen of thick lube in my Hitman, and have enjoyed that quite a bit. Thanks for the responses guys.

I really enjoy playing my 18k Gold PURE as a responsive yoyo. It handles stalls really well.

Stop worrying about what yoyo you should be playing, and just play yoyo. (pssst I am not Landon)

Pick up a Renegade, bought one at Indy over the weekend for my girlfriend, remembered why I had so much fun with them before, and it got plenty of use at Conner's house after. Everyone loves a Renegade!

I like to play my FHZ and the new FH2 slightly responsive (haven't mastered binds yet
), though I don't like it if they snap back in the middle of a trick. My Lyn Fury is starting to play unresponsive, so I'm going to have to either start learning binding (which I need to do anyway), or silicone one side to make it more responsive until I get binds down.

Dual-silicone Kickside. Stock Zeros are nice responsive throws, though.

I play most all of my yoyos responsive most of the time. Sometimes I change them for a bit but usually go back to responsive. The exception is my hectic, it's always been unresponsive.

Someone recommended that I consider getting a Cherry Bomb for responsive play ... it arrived today and it became immediately apparent that I'm even less smooth than I thought I was. I'm impressed jhb8426 that you generally play responsive. Other than the Hectic, do you have setups of varying responsiveness on your different yoyos?

One thing to keep in mind is that I generally play old school stuff. So responsive works fine, maybe better for me. As for varying response setups, yes, I have a few. My HM collection works out nicely for that. I have a few setup as responsive, and some unresponsive, varying the selection w/shims and varying amounts of bearing lube. So I can readily move from one to the other and still have the same yoyo basically.

Since returning to yoyoing in the past year I've been so enamored of unresponsive play that, until just recently, responsive play has kind of been a novelty. I already liked the Hitman, as well as the Dark Magic, quite a bit, but this past few weeks playing with responsiveness has made me appreciate YYJ stuff all the more. It's also been a lot of fun searching for responsive tricks to learn, as I know a pitiful few.
