I see comments such as this quite frequently here so I though it would be fun to compare TheYo.com to a few of the other popular yoyo related boards to see how we stack up to the competition so to speak.Originally Posted by A number of people in one form or another

TheYo.com
1. As noted above, this board is sponsored by TheYoStore.com. Do not advertise for or recommend purchases from other on-line yoyo stores. This rule applies regardless of whether or not the YoStore has a particular item in stock, or if it ships to a particular geographic location. Likewise, do not post
direct links to other online stores, including product photos or other store
advertising.
Note: The above includes re-hosting other store's images on a personal website.
This is an intellectual property/copyright issue. We're not just being mean people about this.

2) Do not post advertising for other online stores or web boards.
3) Do not post direct links to other online stores or web boards.
5) Do not post any information or other material protected by copyright without the permission of the copyright owner. By posting material, the posting party warrants and represents that it owns the copyright with respect to such material or has received permission from the copyright owner. In addition, the posting party grants Dave and users of the Board the non-exclusive right and license to display, copy, publish, distribute, transmit, print and use such information or other material.

2. Criticism of the YoStore or other on-line yoyo stores, will not be tolerated
on the forums. If you have a problem with any on-line yoyo store, take it up
with the store personally via email or other means. Similarly company or
product bashing will not be tolerated. If you have a legitimate criticism of
a company or product do so in a respectful manner.
Skilltoys forum
1a) Product 'bashing' is considered to be defamatory material. If you have a criticism or a complaint about a particular product, please be civil. From time to time, representatives from the major yo-yo companies visit the Board. In most cases, Dave has personally invited these representatives to post information about their products. Like any participant on the Board, you are to treat these visitors with the utmost respect and courtesy.
Extreme Spin forum
3. No flaming people or stores.
If you have a problem with a person, please PM or email them. The forum is not the place to start a big argument. If you have a problem with a certain store, please contact them through email or other means. However, if you feel like you've been scammed by someone (through trade, ebay, etc.) and they're not responding to you, you're welcome to post about it, as a warning to other people.

Members should post in a way that is respectful of other users. Flaming or
abusing other users will not be tolerated. Derogatory or disrespectful
comments regarding race, ethnic background, language, gender, sexual
preference or religion are strictly prohibited.

Members should remember this board is aimed at a general audience. Profanity
and obscenities are unacceptable. Partially edited profanity such as
"fluck", "beyotch", "f--k", fah-q, WTF, MF'er and "di**" is also unacceptable.
Attempting to circumvent this rule using abbreviations, acronyms, or other obvious representations of unacceptable language will not be tolerated. Posting
pornographic or generally offensive text, images, links, etc. will not be
tolerated. This includes web sites posted in user profiles.
Other restrictions may be made according to context. As a rule of
thumb, if it can be used on primetime TV it's probably OK, but if you are
unsure if a word is appropriate, DO NOT USE IT.

1) No foul or offensive language. No rude or obnoxious behavior. No product bashing. No spoofing. No flaming.

4. No posting obscene things.
Everything posted here must be "PG-13" or below. This is a child-friendly forum. There are a lot of young people who like skill toys, and we'd like to encourage them. If you link to something with "bad" music in it, for instance, make sure to put a note by the link saying so. Your post could look like this:
[link] (Not safe for kids, music with swears)
5. No swearing or inappropriate language.
Actually, if you swear the board will automatically "mask" the bad words, so that's fine. If you try to get around the filter, you will be banned temporarily or permanently. Don't Avoid the Censor! Do not post a swear with "!" in place of the "i" or "$" in place of the "s"! If it's a word that shouldn't be posted then it should be masked COMPLETELY out, don't try to get around that. However, just because a certain word isn't automatically filtered, it doesn't mean that it's okay to say it. We cannot filter out every single bad word or phrase. If you're not sure whether it's okay or not, then just avoid saying it.

7. Respect copyrights and avoid plagiarism. Posting someone else's work without permission or proper references is unacceptable. Posting links to illegally
copied software or music files, or links to information on how to circumvent copy protection mechanisms is prohibited.

See above for full description. The short form:
5) No plagiarism.

Dave retains the right to remove inappropriate, illegal, or potentially illegal messages. When posting a message on the Board, you have agreed to abide by Board rules. Any posting not meeting the guidelines above may be removed at any time without notice to the poster.
So there you have it on a point by point basis.
Looking at a couple of the other boards:
- yoyoing.com and yoyonation do not seem to have any rules posted. So either anything goes there, or maybe you can get busted and not know why. Be that as it seems, they do have rules.
- JD's now inactive yoyofreaks forum used the same set of rules as TheYo.com (with permission).
Best rule of all:
Rule #1. Don't be an idiot. Perhaps the most important rule I've seen on any board so far is the number 1 rule on Extreme Spin. I wish I'd thought of that one.
The SIG size rule
We limit sig pix sizes to 100x400 pixels, as well as the amount of text that can be included. This rule has frequently been criticized. We are not alone in this. One boating board I frequent doesn't allow sigs or avatars. A car board I'm on recently imposed a 100x400 pixel size limit on sig pix as well as a text limit. People were using 400x600 pix of their cars and 20 line description of it as a sig. A 2-3 line post would take the whole screen when the sig was included.
The BST 30/30 rule
This rule was implemented to protect the clientele here. It discourages spammers and people who come here only to sell their stuff and never otherwise contribute to the board.
My guess is that the people that think the other boards don't have rules is because they never read them, the same as here.
So there you have it sports fans. You decide.

I love theyo forums. I have memberships to others like yoyonation and skilltoyz but I find the yo to be the most friendly and cool. Lots of cool people who are accepting who know a lot. Not too many people though... It's the atmosphere I like in a forum.
But that's me.Throwing: Milk, Dark Magic

As someone who has actually moderated the II forum, I can say that even though there may not be a posted list of rules.. all of the rules listed above pretty much apply there exactly the same way.
It's nothing new kids, get over it.
KyleYou can argue with me, but you'll still be wrong.

I'm not very comfortable with what tight-wadness I see around here sometimes, but overall it can be avoided via the good shipments, good people and good atmosphere.
Take the bad with the good and get over it.
It's a good mantra.

i thought it was funny that you broke the rules posting this
----------------------------------
How so? I didn't post a link to any other store...
Talking about other forums does not break any rule.
And all references were attributed.

Acknowledging the existence of other stores or mentioning them in the proper context isn't against the rules, and I don't think forum rules/policies are copyrighted material. He's not bashing or misrepresenting other stores or theyostore; this is all primary source info without jhb's opinions inserted. I'm not sure what else would be in question.

Theyo doesn't have any rules that I think are strict
My best yoyo is a water ball yoyo!

Put this in your sig if anyone you've ever known has died in a Pokemon battle.

I've seen it happen more than once over there. It's pretty irritating, really.

Very well stated JHB, if anyone would bother to read the few rules we have, this wouldn't be a problem.

just a note to everyone, this isnt meant to bring on "I like this better than that" types of responses, so check those at the door please...the purpose is to clarify that this forum is no different from the other forums in terms of rules besides the sig limits and the 30/30 rule, yet we still get people crying out every now and then that we're unnecessarily strict...
rules get made when a select few abuse the system, and the ones who complain are the ones who are doing the abuse...be that as it may, it still irks me a bit when someone bashes a place that I'm a part of simply because they refuse to follow a few simple guidelines (that they agred to abide by when they registered, no less)
if they get pissed and quit posting here because they cant follow a rule, so be it...that's less work for me and the other mods to do...
just doing my part

One of the biggest bugs up my arse is when someone joins the forum just to promote their yoyo related project or product. Tapping theyo resources makes life really easy for anyone wanting to target a mass yoyo market (eyeballs). I have gone off and even banned people who sole intent was just to use TheYo only for their gain. Never once contributing to the forum in any useful manner. Because of my actions I've been called a Nazi (heard it on the radio, lol). In print TheYo has suffered just read the yoyowiki. Lots of hard work has gone into making what TheYo forum is today not only by me but by the moderators and enthusiastic members. Misunderstandings can make things even worse that's why the Rules are posted!
I make mistakes sometimes so excusssssse ME! lol
thanks & aloha,
Mike

I think it's interesting to read TheYos' page on the yoyowiki. The topics covered are devoted to just three: Controversies, Contact Info, and External Links. To me that's very telling of the mindset of the authors.
I guess if you run your own wiki, neutrality doesn't have to be important.

If you succeed in destroying someone's deeply entrenched beliefs using facts and logic, that person won't change his mind but will hate your guts forever.
