I cleaned the bearing on my new FH1 last night, put it back on, threw it, the string slipped down into the spacer (d'oh!), took it apart to fix it, and the bearing totally fell apart. I mean TOTALLY! Little metal balls went everywhere and the thing is in pieces. Im like "OK... that's a new one..."![]()
Why would that have happened? I didnt do anything different than I normally do.

its probably an older bearing that uses a plastic ring that holds the balls and if you take off the sheild it falss apart. it happened to me with my stunt pilot.

What? There was no dropping involved. i soaked the sumbich in nail polish remover, dremeled it for a while, and put it back on. I dont drop things. The bearing literally fell apart in my hand.

Hmmmm...
How old is the bearing?
Older FH1 bearings that have been used a LOT (actually any old bearing that's been used a lot) is prone to falling apart like that... I think... I remember a recent story of someone who's had his FH1 for 3 years and then BAMN the bearing fell apart when he took it out to clean it.

Well Ive only had the FH1 for like 3 weeks max. And it was NIP when I got it. I really havent played with it that much.

Pleae ignore any typing errors in the following post, after reading this thread I am laughing histarically.
This is the ultimate case of "I told ya so"... you basically cleaned your bearing into oblivion. This is the same thing that deteriorates bearings to the point that they lock up, and it's the same thing I and others have been warning people about for years.
Dremeling a bearing is a horrible idea. Dremel's are designed to spin between 5,000 and 30,000 rpms. Yoyo bearings are designed to max out at around 10,000. So, unless you always use the lowest setting... you're killing your bearing already. Not to mention that the bearings are designed to run at 10k when LUBRICATED.. so all you people running dry bearings are multiplying this effect.
Most likely what happened, is that the vibration of deteriorated metal balls running against the tracks of the bearing at high speeds caused the tracks to crack and come apart... and since that's what kinda holds it together, guess what happens.
Anyway, get a new bearing.. luckily they are cheap.. next time I might suggest being a bit more careful.
Oh, to the ones chiming in about how that happens with old bearings and blah blah blah.. no, it doesn't. I've got yoyos with bearings dating back to 1995, I've got bearings that are carbon/steel composite, stainless steel, etc.. not a single one has ever locked up, or fallen apart. But then again, I don't clean them with anything more than compressed air, and I actually run them with a light oil... so basically, I run them how they are designed to be run... who'da thunk it.
Ok, I'm done laughing now.. sorry it happened, but such is life.
KyleYou can argue with me, but you'll still be wrong.

well, captain smarty-pants, I will have you know that I am a bit smarter than the average bear, and realize that bearings arent supposed to be spun at 30,000 rpms. I have always been leery of dremeling my bearings at super high speed, so I ALWAYS go slow, and I also put some lube in after Im done, mainly to avoid that horrible screaming sound. Like I said, this is a brand new bearing and this was the first time I cleaned it. I could see you mocking my "stupidity" in dremeling my bearing if I was doing it every week, but Im not that dumb. I am poor, so I take care of everything I own like its the last one on Earth. Still laughing?

Yes, actually, I am :)
I re-read my post.. perhaps I came off a bit offensively.. not intended.
It's the relentless cleaning that eats it up. Dremel or no dremel, lube or no lube.. makes no difference after a while.
There is also the possibility that the bearing was badly abused in one way or another and it caused stress fractures which were multiplied by the cleaning and dremeling. Then there is the one in a million chance that the bearing was just bad to begin with.. but both of those are less likely.
KyleYou can argue with me, but you'll still be wrong.

no problem- just so happened I was editing my last post when this one showed up- It was the 1st time I cleaned and dremeled it.

Don't a dremel. Just use them fingers and spin em.
I still get my yyj bearings locked up. I think those sheilds are there for a reason.Eat, Sleep, BM!
