Alright so i am fairly new to yoyos. I used them years back and recently pulled out my old yomega brain. I had an absolute blast playing with it and I am obsessing now. I recently just got the yomega power brain xp but i want to move on to a butterfly shaped YoYo with a bearing. I don't want to spend to much right now. I love cheap. What yoyo would you recommend i get along those lines? and where would i find it the cheapest? Please help!

Cheap, good = YoYoJam Journey.
Dual o-ring response, nice weight and size.
About $15.00
Will take you very far.
If you order a any yoyo, be sure to order string at the same time. It wears fast.

The YoYoJam plastics - like the Lyn Fury, Kickside, and Journey - are great. In addition to string, which jhb noted, you might also consider getting some thick lube. The bearing will wear in quickly, making the yoyo less and less responsive. As this happens, the yoyo will stop responding to a tug, and will require a bind to get it to come back to your hand. Thick lube allows you to keep playing responsive, where a tug will bring it back.
At least 15% of what I say is true.

Yeah don't forget that these cheaper yoyos can be played just as well as the more expensive ones, I am usually always throwing plastic yoyos. Remember, 'It is not the yoyo that makes the player.'
As JRod said the yoyojam Lyn Fury, Kickside, and Journey I perfer the kickside but that is my preference and if you ask yoyoers which is their favorite you will get all three answers in your quest. Just pick the one that looks like it has the best shape for you.
Yes binds can be relatively easy to learn, just don't jump into unresponsive play right away it develops bad habits in yoyoing but after a couple months of responsive throwing you could move on to unresponsive throwing which opens up more opportunities for tricks.
But I still do say grab some lube too, as JRod said, yyj thick lube makes a yoyo more responsive and the yyj thin lube also makes the yoyo more responsive at first but it breaks down a lot faster than the thick which makes it less responsive. I suggest thin lube because lube plus a thin gap would still be responsive.

Yo-yo Factory Pocket Change $13.00

yoyo factory "one" should be about $10
best $10 beginner throw I've played, specially with a regular/wide bearing making it fully unresponsive and fairly performant.

I'd definitely go for a yyj plastic. They can take you as far as you need to go.

As everyone's been saying, YoYoJam plastics are definitely the way to go. Its all just preference between the Journey, the Lyn Fury and the Kickside--pick whatever you think looks the coolest, and thats the yo-yo for you!

Only problem with the fhz; Jonahtrozim is that it requires friction sickers which wear out faster than silicone and/or O-rings which supposedly last forever.
Also as vinegar eel said, buy string, buy string, buy string. String is most definetly a major part that wears out quickly, you may think you're going to only need 10 to start out, but I've burnt through 100 faster than I expected when I re entered the world of yoyoing.

Friction stickers and sili are definitely not something you want to start out your yoyo adventure dealing with. Replacing dead strings is something unavoidable and you definitely want to get plenty on slick 6 when you first start. A bundle of 100 will definitely get you going good.

I would't recommend a plastic other than the YYF "one" along with a wider bearing (which would cost you about just as much in total as one of the yoyos talked about here, but will most likely end up playing better)
but you can still go cheap and get something even better
Aoda pirate doesn't cost much
I think the Aoda speed team is awesome (not sure bout the name but I was blown away when I tried it)
or if you want to go YYF, the DV888 costs about $40 and will allow you to perform basically any trick just as well, if not better than a $100 premium throw.
about binding, you can learn it in a couple of hours if you keep at it (a friend of mine learned it in about 15 minutes) so don't bother going with responsive yoyos unless you're ready to buy another yoyo again in one month because you've outgrowned these cheap plastics.
they're good for kids or to take with you and let people try on yoyoing, but they're not viable even on a relatively short term.
I generally recommend the DV888 because it's fairly cheap ($40ish), it looks and play well, it's "expandable", if you break it slamming it on the floor (which isn't that easy, believe me, mine seen the floor a lot of times as it's one of my street 5A throws and I'm just getting started in 5A) you can just get another one.

I got to try a YYF One last Saturday and while I was impressed that it's only $10, I wasn't impressed with it in and of itself, especially compared to the Bolt, Kickside, Lyn, etc. I don't really care too much about vibe, but the One I tried had vibe that was too much to ignore. Other than that, I'll just post these in response to the rest of Hadoq's comments about plastic yoyos:
With a siliconed Lyn Fury:
With a modified Freehand Zero:

I admit I really don't like plastics, it hasn't much to do about performance, but they just feel like toys for kids.
and when you play with a $12 Aoda pirate, you really can't spend $20 on a lyn or a FHZ anymore
once people realize how good chinese throws can be, mainstream companies who sell alot of plastics will be in trouble
I for one stick with premium metals, rares, collectables, and most of the time, this is where it's at.
I don't really see the point in getting a $20 plastic to begin with, this is why I prefer the "one" over all the others, as it's actually a $10
I started with a velocity and a fast 201, they were both "ok" I guess, but the one is clearly better. and I never liked the lyn fury (played it too) or the FHZ (owned one, gave it away)
I could also pop out videos with the "one" the "fast" or the "velocity", we all know that good players can be impressive with anything, but don't be fooled, Jensen winning worlds with a northstar is nothing more than marketing.
The thing with these topics, they are written by people who don't really want the info, as it's right there, there are probably 2 or 3 topics on the 1st page of any yoyo forum, newbie section, there are tutorials or buying guides for 1st yoyos all over the internet, including video tests of any of these yoyos.
there is no "right" or "wrong" here, only different point of views. mine being "why spend $20 in a thing that you won't use anymore in 1 month, when you can spend $15 on a throw that'll still have the performance you need in 1 year? Get 2 aodas for the price of a northstar, the first, you can play it when you learn and ding it on the floor, and you can save the 2nd one for when you're more comfortable and don't slam your throws on the floor that much.
plastic reference yoyos such as the lyn or FHZ are bound to disappear sooner or later, once people figure out what they can have for the same price, only made in china out of aluminum.
PS: a troll doesn't write that much, they usually go with 1 line sentences with no argumentation whatsoever.
some "one" vids, seriously, once you get there, you'll most likely already have a nice metal collection
here we go, both being stickied to this very page of this very forum
First off buying guide
F.A.Q.
in which, the first thing you can see is:
What should i buy as a beginner?
If you have not yoed for a long time, or have never had a "propper" yo. These are your best choices. (Even if you've thrown before, i would DEFINITELY suggest starting here - or to put it simply, if you dont know what to buy, get one of these)
- Kickside
- Lyn Fury
- Speedmaker
- Standard Velocity
- Duncan FHZ
Pick whatever you think looks the best.
If you get the FHZ buy some dif pads. (See point 3 for why)
If you get the kickside or the speedmaker, buy 2 red shims so you can make the gap larger when you need to. You wont need them at first.
No matter what you buy, pick up a bundle of 100 slick 6 strings and a bottle of yyj thin lube.
Have a look at "I have $80/$90/$100 to spend on my first yoyo, what should I get?" for a bit more.Last edited by Atomic Cow; 05-03-2011 at 06:00 AM. Reason: doublepost

I like plastic yoyos and still play with them even though I have a lot of sweet metals. What's wrong with feeling like a kid? I mean reguardless of what it is made out of, you are still playing with a yoyo. I would agree that aoda yoyos are very under rated compared to other company, but they also do not have the same avaliblity as other brands. It has been only here of late the there have been more aoda yoyos pop up in more of the stores.

I feel like a kid, but I like beautiful objects, I like the sensation, I'm a very very tactile person. for example, as I musician, I only own rather "vintage" instruments, even tho you can just download them on internet now and have just the same sound. I need the feel of something crafted, meaningful.
I don't like the feel of molded plastic, the colors of most plastics, I love how the YYJ play, but I wouldn't get one because I don't like their design, except for a few full metal ones.
preference is subjective, no one is "right" or "wrong" here, it's not because you don't understand my point of view that it means it's wrong.
for example, you could give me a $1000 master keyboard with a $2000 nord electro, I couldn't play on these just as I could on a real fender rhodes, they don't feel the same, therefore I can not express the same things on them.
same goes with yoyos, I use them as a mean to express myself, and I need my throws to "connect" with me or I can't play with em. there are some fairly bad yoyos that I have and I keep playing because I like them, I like their feel, their looks. Performance is not my primary objective when buying a yoyo.
so yes, for someone just starting, one might just as well take some cheap plastic, but you can't tell they play just the same it's like saying an "E flat" sounds the same on the piano than on a guitar.
in other words you could tell I'm a fashion victim (^^)/

YYJ plastics are leaps and bounds better than typical kids toys. It's obviously been a while since you've throw something like an early duncan, a yomega, or just some random no name you pick up from the corner store. Of course i love my metals, but I'm always impressed every time I go back and pick up my kickside or lyn. I would definitely recommend these two. I've yet to have the pleasure of throwing a fhz, but I'm sure if I'm impressed with the flying squirrel as much as I am, I would fall in love with a fhz.
You haven't seen any good trolls then. I also know it's not an intentional troll, but this advice is pretty... well let's just say it was tough removing my face from palm. (I'm ending here with off topic. no further replies than just to help out yoyoman27 out in his decision.)
