    Where is the knot?

In the string? or around the axle?

Or is it just that the string is all messed up in the gap stopping it from spinning?

If its around the axle, its usually because the loop you throw into the gap actually opens up, and the yo falls into it. Causing said knot.

If its that the string is all messed up in the gap, you've either made the loop too big or your string tension is WAY off and the loop is getting all twisted.

Ive never got a knot in the yo from tugging it up, only thing i can think of is string tension again.

If the string is slipping off the bearing down onto the axle, then you need to close the gap up a little.

you are giving the loop too much slack sounds like, try binding closer to the yoyo, like if you trapeze try to make your hand close to the yoyoy and tug a little harder, it takes a little practice to get a perfect bind. If you are throwing breakaways yet, try to just keep your hand about 3 inches above the yoyoy and pull them apart like your going to rip the string, and then let go your non throw hand string, its a fast little bind.
