    Hi everyone

I was in this shop the other day looking for a gift for my lil bro and found these Power yo yoyos on sale - looked very cool so i picked a FX3 http://www.poweryo.com/products_fx3.htm for him... it was really cool because we learnt how to do some nice sleeper string tricks and the yoyo comes back at the slightest flick.

I decided to get one for myself and went and bought a FX7 model (black widow) yoyo http://www.poweryo.com/products_fx7.htm

Its not as comfortable to hold as the FX3 but it has two removable metal ball bearings and looks better overall

Now i dont know if any of you have used POwer yos before but this FX7 hasnt been much fun since i got it out of its pack. The thing is as soon as i have wound up the string and let the yoyo fall ...accoring to the instructions and the training videos taht came with it...but if i want to make it come back - it doesnt respond...just keeps spinning like crazy. If i jack up the string real hard then it tries to roll up - half way or even goes all crazy and gets jammed in its own string

I think its the lack of friction between the string end and the ball bearing around which it loops. The contact is too smooth and that might be a good or a bad thing i just dont know coz i dont have much knowledge of yoyos. Maybe its my string...its a little flexible and not too tight so it absorbs some of my pulls. I know i have bought an advanced model and should have gone with anotehr FX3 one ... but now i need to learn how to get the most fun out of my FX7 - i have tried all the POwer yo training videos and tips but the yoyo just keeps spinning and doesnt even complete a basic drop-down-and-back trick - atleast not everytime.

Id like to hear from some FX7 users if any - otehrwise any advise will be appreciated - thanks

Ok, i'm going to lay this out nice and bluntly.

PowerYo suck, all their yoyos are awful playing copies of stuff from other companies and the people behind them are incredibly crappy people who don't deserve your money. They've screwed over many a player here in the UK.

If you'd like a Black Widow that actually works, then i'd suggest picking up a Yomega Hyper Warp Heavy Wing.

If you're a UK player yourself send me a PM and i'll direct you to some UK forums and shops where you can aquire the help you need.

    Thanks for a honest answer

hmm so my suspisions came out to be true...the product looks good...feels good but doesnt perform as it should - atleast not the FX7..

But what i would really like to know is waht makes a yoyo a good one- more specifically what does the FX7 or the Power Yo as a whole have that really makes it not worth getting.

I live down under - and will have a look at somewhere else for good yoyos....

as for this black widow - itll probably end up on ebay

EDIT: IF anyone can recommend a beginner-interediate yoyo with lots of potential for tricks and quick response...most importantly a comfortable grip then please let me know - im looking for a nice round bulging grip rather than like taht of the FX7 which is thin and pointy...

You can't go wrong with the Freehand Zero if you want a comfy, responsive, but versatile yo-yo. Highly recommended.

ok well i went onto ebay to have a look at some of the local yoyos as i couldnt find any local online retailers. So heres what ive found -

Yo Tech Asteria... the packaging describes it as Base Level 1 ...which i suppose is a beginenr yoyo

    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/SALE-ITEM-YO-...QQcmdZViewItem

    EDIT...

Oooh ooh i found this aussie site that apparently has a FAST 201...heard about the brand on this forum and how its noisy .. but it sure beats the hell out of a power yo...or does it? you tell me :) thanks in advance

Then theres a Yomega yoyo...with no description but looks to be good (has ball bearings):
    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/YOMEGA-HIGH-P...QQcmdZViewItem

Some new Yomegas on sale...look good too:

    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/YO-YO-NEW-Yom...QQcmdZViewItem

But its butterfly desiogn is what i dont like...i want a more restricted design...

heres another Yomega its the Stealthfire transaxle...(3 axles??)
    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/YO-YO-NEW-Yom...QQcmdZViewItem

So out of these which ones would you suggest... yomegas sound like a good brand

I'd have to say, even though you don't like a butterfly design, go with a Yoyojam Lyn Fury, Kickside, Or Duncan Free Hand Zero.

Yomega is a good starting brand, but it will not take you very far unless you plan to go into 2A. If you do plan to do 2A, some good ones are the Yomega Fireball, Yomega Raider, and Yoyojam Sunset Trajectory NXG

Damn ...yoyos are some serious business - not mere toys ... well if RC hobby racing is too expensive for me then i guess yoyos arent a bad choice

well if you plan to start off with some string tricks like say.. trapeze, double or nothing, or brain twisters etc. you're gonna have to learn to love butterflies :) It's possible to do it with imperial/modified shape but that's just giving yourself a harder time learning, plus no tourny competitors use imperial/modified for string tricks anyway (1A,3A,4A,5A)

With all the different types of yo-yos, it is often hard to decide which one is best for you. There are a many shapes, sizes and types of yo-yos on the market, but most yo-yos can be grouped generally into three shape categories. We will discuss the three shapes of the yo-yo, followed by the four axle types. We hope this information will help you find the best yo-yo for your needs.

    Common Yo-yo Shapes

    Classic Shape:

The Classic Shape has been around the longest. It is also known as imperial and/or traditional shape. This shape yo-yo is characterized by a narrow string gap. It is also a known to be the best looper yo-yo of the three.

    Butterfly Shape:

The Butterfly is also known as Wing, GT, and/or Saber) shape. It is essentially the Classic Shape yo-yo reversed. Its shape gives it a very large string gap, making it easy to land on the string. Many advance yo-yo tricks make use of the Butterfly shape and string gap.

    Modified Shape:

The modified is also known as the Modern and/or Proyo shape. It is a great combination of both the other two common yo-yo shapes. The rounded rims make for smooth, easy landings for string tricks. It has a slim profile making looping easy as well. The best feature of this shape is its aditional rim weight, with allows it to sleep for long periods of time.

    Yo-yo Axle Types

    Fixed Axle:

If a yo-yo has a fixed axle, it means the yo-yo's axle does not have moving parts. The axle does not spin independently of the sides. The axle spins in the loop at the bottom of the string. The fixed axles were traditionally made out of wood and generally found on the Classic Shaped yo-yo.

    Transaxle:

The transaxle yo-yo has outer and inner parts which move independently from each other. The outer part is transaxle which spins around the inner (fixed) axle. The string then covers the outer part. This configuration gives the yo-yo a good sleep, making tricks possible, which would not be possible with the Fixed Axle.

    Ball Bearing:

This yo-yo is similar to the transaxle, but it uses ball bearings between the transaxle and inner axle. This ball bearing configuration makes the yo-yo more responsive and better better at looping tricks, whereas transaxles excel at sleeping/string tricks. It has been found that transaxles sleep longer than fixed axles, and ball bearing sleep longer than transaxles.

    Clutch Transaxles:

These yo-yos consist of a transaxle and a clutch mechanism which opens up to allow the yo-yo to sleep when the yo-yo is spinning at high speeds, but as the yo-yo slows the clutch engages, stopping the transaxle from spinning and returning the yo-yo to the hand. The most common clutch transaxle yoyo is the brain, or power brain yoyo. These yo-yos do the work for you!

i just bought a FAST 201 from ebay for 13 bucks delivered...damn thats cheap and heard the yoyos good too... i mean i saw it on a regular aussie site for 30 bucks less postage.

Anyways not sure what it looks like but it does have a sort of a butterfl look - dunno but it just says its got a 'wide shape for ease of use'.

im not sayin mod it rite away. if ur a noob then just play it like is, i think its a good yoyo stock. once ur better and in need of a better yoyo, then u can mod it to perform better. but now just have FUN.

I'm always amazed that one of the first pieces of advice given to a new guy asking what might be good for a beginner starting out is "You should get yoyo xyz and mod it."

OK guys the 201 has arrived....yay
the thing ive noticed is the lil pointy bumps right around the axle on the yoyos body that respond to pressure and sink in.. is that what you call a starbust? well anyways this thing im guessign is what keeps the string centered on the bearing? the yoyo spins fast but im guessing the starbust is giving it too much friction.

Maybe its coz ive kept both sides close ...and that means more response...which i can adjust be moving the sides slightly apart and thus making it less noisy... well i guess ill have to master some basic moves first
