Just thought i would make a list and explane some stuff that is nice to have when moding/tuning/maintening your yo-yos
Lathe- for any serious moder that makes a lot of hard mods or wants to sell mods this is a must have... a mini wood lathe will be find for must plastic yo-yo mods... a really nice thing to have for a lathe is a 3 inch 2 or 4 jaw self centering chuck... this can hold the yoyo but the rim of the yo-yo so u can work on the responce system or bearing housing... also will need some cutting eadges... u dont need much for yo-yos imo Dremel- awesome for cutting big chunks of yo-yos or some times cleaning up scratches on the rims... also a gret way to break in bearings... but spin it under 20,000 RPMs... SuperGlue- always i nice thing to have when the ring you just modded duznt come to a snap fit or the axle tower of your yo-yo is cracking a little... Calipers- great addition to a lathe... ncie to be able to measure rings or diameters and stuff... and u can get a pair for like $3 in the clearance bin *dave*cough*dave* Acetone and RIT dye- great for coloring your yo-yos and making different patterns... very customizable SandPaper- its ncie to dave from 100-2000 grits for polishing aluminum or cleaning/polishing plastic after being cut... mostly used w/ lathe or drill Drill- used as a cheep mans lathe... or to drill holes Drill Press-always nice to have when redrilling alxes or spacer wells... got mine for $30 at a machine sale if ya got any more post them Last edited by Luke Vader; 07-27-2006 at 07:16 AM.. |

sp1nm0nkey says: Metal lathes are only good for cutting metal, and not too much else. The only reason to buy a metal lathe for yo-yo making is if you plan to make lots of yo-yos, and very little modding. Repete after me: METAL LATHES ARE NOT FOR THE EASILY DISCOURAGED. I have wasted so much aluminum it's not even funny. Metal lathes don't cut curves unless they're CNC and hooked up to a controler/computer (Of cource, you can be clever and make several cuts with the compound topslide, but that's insanely hard to reproduce). Metal lathes don't make intricit cuts; the bits don't allow it (you can make custom bits to get around this, but it takes lots of grinding, and you have to temper the bit afterwards. The custom bit is usually only good at what it's designed for too.) If you try to do the task with a normal bit, you may gouge into your piece and have to start all over. Also, the lathe is like a child, it requires intense mantence. One speck of metal left over on the cross slide, and you've put a small gouge in the carrige. If you want to completely ignore me (like samurai gecko) then by all means go for it. But IMHO, it's way more useful to have a wood lathe than a metal lathe for just modding. Now, don't get me wrong, I love my metal lathe, but for simple tasks like putting rings on a yo-yo, recessing the friction sticker, etc. etc. a metal lathe is not nesseseraly overkill, but it's ment to do a totally different thing.
Now everyone, please don't kill me :) *Dawns flame retardent suit* P.S. I do have a wood lathe and a metal lathe, just incase you thought I was biased or something :).
