Thread: TechTV Nostalgia

Long rant, bear with me if you care to...

When I woke this morning, turned on my TV and found that I'd somehow left it on G4 last night when I turned it off, gah what a disappointment. But to my surprise, after the commercial break I was greeted with the old Xplay set, with TechTV logos in the back ground! It was a rerun from ~2004, before G4 took hold and destroyed my favorite channel. Anyway, this got me thinking and all nostalgic on how awesome TechTV was and how much I miss it's pure techy awesomeness.

I'm sure there are quite a few people on here who are too young to have ever watched the original TechTV, and who think G4 is a fine channel. However, those people are wrong. Unlike G4, a SpikeTV wannabe, TechTV actually lived up to it's claim as a channel about technology. There wasn't any nonsense like Cops or Cheaters on MY tech channel, just simply great diverse programming that covered all areas of tech. The Screen Savers was the pinnacle of programming and honestly my favorite show ever, and where I learned my love of tech and computers. It was Patrick Norton's $500 dollar gaming PC segment that inspired me to build my first computer. That brings up another issue, the host's from TechTV actually new what they were talking about and were well versed in the different areas of tech. You had the knowledgeable older guys Leo Laporte and Patrick Norton, the younger edgier guys of Kevin Rose (The Dark Tipper), Yoshi, Martin Sargent, and later Alex Albrecht, and then the lovely women of that made viewing that much better Sarah Lane, Cat Scwartz, and Morgan Webb. All these people were genuine and actually new what they were talking about, not some fake hollywood types reading scripted memes from the teleprompter.

My only solace is that most of the original TechTV crew has moved on to the world of internet Podcasting. This allows me to grasp at the glory days of TechTV when ever I need through show's like Revision3's Diggnation, Totally Rad Show, Internet Superstar, and Tekzilla, along with Leo Laporte's tWiT, and Morgan's Webb Alert. But however great these internet show's are they can never live up to the awesomeness of an entire TV channel dedicated to all the things I care about. And no, despite their slogan, G4 fails pathetically at being that channel.

Thank you for reading. Every 6 months or so I have to rant about how I miss TechTV and how bad G4 is, this time you guys at Theyo are the lucky ones who get to read it :).

I remember TechTV.

I lived in vegas at the time, and right before I moved, I had a friend who also ranted about how it was going to change to G4.

Oh well, I don't watch TV much anyway. ;]

I LOVED THE SCREENSAVERS!! I was devastated when it was canceled...:( I even followed Sarah Lanes Blog for about a month, until it started to deviate from Tech to her personal life. I don't MIND G4 and I'll watch it, I just won't watch COPS or Cheaters on it...If I want to watch that stuff I'll watch daytime TV...(Maury, Jerry Springer...blah blah blah).

I love Jerry Springer. Gives me confirmation that there is still hope for humanity. And some of them are funnier than you guys here!!!

Yea techtv was better I only like x play and attack of the show on g4

Haha yeah. I got false hopes though after hearing Weird Al's song about it. Its much MORE funny! ;D
